In South Africa, especially related to the console community, we have been faced with uncertainty with each new Call of Duty title. This uncertainty has always stemmed from the fact that our connections have sometimes not met the minimum requirements of the international standards. Yet there is still concerns over the priority of how games will be found.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will have something akin to a virtual house to they collected data from Black Ops 2, they saw that the matchmaking.
The studio and Activision have released a guide which shows how exactly the public matchmaking works in the game. Sometimes the game places you in a local match or in an international match where people are all from other countries irrespective of the ping, so why does this happen? Proximity does not adhere strictly to city, state or country as seen on a map. Rather, it breaks down into four tiers of geographical region surrounding the player. The query starts in the tier closest to the player and expands from there if it cannot find enough matches.
This step takes the proximity-filtered list and narrows it further to the set of games that fall roughly in the same broad skill range. This is very loose criteria in Public Match and is a broad-stroke filter that avoids games at the extreme ends. Connection quality includes a measure of ping, bandwidth between you and the host, and NAT compatibility.

During the self-reflective journey of personal growth and Sergeant rank iterations constituting Call of Duty’s multiplayer, players have historically connected via a matchmaking system that used their regions as the sole basis for grouping together soldiers with similar connection speeds. In a tweet sent earlier this week, Treyarch Design Director David Vonderhaar revealed that Black Ops 2 deviates from standard procedure and matches players via ping and latency exclusively.
It is in and being tested. Not region based anymore. October 25, Speedier sessions and reduced drop-outs should arise as a result of the new system—in theory, at least. Never underestimate the incoherent thrashings of a year-old server-star in full swing. Another equally neat perk confirmed by Treyarch: dedicated PC hosting. The main focus of Black Ops 2 has been on the Xbox and PS3 versions, which has left a lot of PC version related questions unanswered. Luckily Treyarch has just released new information on the PC versions online security, matchmaking and dedicated servers:. Black Ops 2 PC is going to “feature” both matchmaking and dedicated servers, but not like in Modern Warfare 3.
Last year’s MW3’s matchmaking was the only way to gain levels, but it was completely P2P Peer 2 Peer based, while the dedicated servers were unranked. The BO2 PC version is taking a step in the right direction, but it’s still a bit of a hit and miss: there won’t be dedicated servers available, but the matchmaking system will use them – this should in theory prevent majority of the hacks that are used in P2P matches.
Due to this new system every public match and League Play will be done via matchmaking lobbies that run on dedicated servers.
Multiplayer matchmaking in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will work differently than in previous iterations of the franchise. In a recent conversation via Twitter, the developer explained to fans that the matchmaking system in Black Ops 2 would use latency and ping statistics instead of region, to determine the best games for players to join. While details are scare on how this will work, it sounds like the new matchmaking system will pair you with the absolute best host available, instead of just pairing you with the closest.
Whether or not this will curb connection drops for Black Ops 2 is yet to be seen unless Treyarch can find an answer for Rage Quitters , but it looks like they are actively trying to improve upon the multiplayer experience from a connectivity stance as well. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 matchmaking is based on latency and ping
Though a compelling single player element and engaging cooperative modes like Zombies have always been subheadings on the calling card of Call of Duty , the franchise’s real bread and butter is its multiplayer. Beyond keeping players engaged for dozens of hours upon end, the multiplayer helps prolong the length of the title long after the hour campaign has been completed.
However, with this year’s new Call of Duty , Black Ops 2 , hitting store shelves in just a few short weeks, a pretty substantial change is looming in the horizon. No, we’re not talking about the new features — like futuristic weaponry — that Treyarch is cooking up for gamers, but a new back-end change that should further improve the quality of that fan-favorite experience. As confirmed by Treyarch’s David Vonderhaar over Twitter , Black Ops 2 multiplayer gamers will be matched with one another based on ping and latency.
In the past, Call of Duty has used a player’s region to determine what type of opponents they should be teamed up with and against, but for Black Ops 2 that will no longer be the case.
