It was a party I didn’t want to attend. Despite the nice summer evening, all I wanted to do was go home. But there I was, standing amongst a crowd of people feeling slightly alien. Forward a few hours later, and I’m dancing with a guy who not only could dance but had such a beautiful smile, he made me stay longer. I didn’t think anything of it, except that he had something about him I really liked. But that was until he told me his age. I could deal with three to eight years younger but 10 plus was a big age gap for my conservative, borderline militant ideas about love. I’m an open-minded person living in an open society so was quite surprised by my own thinking, but there you go. I guess I bought into the idea that it is only men who have younger partners.

Older Woman/Younger Man and Why Age Has Nothing to Do With Love

Dickinson was born in Amherst , Massachusetts , into a prominent family with strong ties to its community. After studying at the Amherst Academy for seven years in her youth, she briefly attended the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary before returning to her family’s house in Amherst. Evidence suggests that Dickinson lived much of her life in isolation. Considered an eccentric by locals, she developed a penchant for white clothing and was known for her reluctance to greet guests or, later in life, to even leave her bedroom.

Dickinson never married, and most friendships between her and others depended entirely upon correspondence.

Richard Phillips survived the longest wrongful prison sentence in American history by writing poetry and painting with watercolors. But on a cold day in the prison yard, he carried a knife and thought about revenge. Richard Phillips is a tall man with broad shoulders and a habit of singing to himself, usually without words, a deep and joyful sound that seems to rise from his soul.

He began singing when he was a boy, and kept singing in prison, and now sings in the car, and at the dinner table, sustaining that one long note, as if nothing in the world could stop the music. Two days after he was sentenced to life in prison in , Phillips wrote a poem. It may have been the first poem he ever wrote. He was 26 years old, and had left high school in tenth grade, and now, with plenty of time to wonder, he took a pencil and set his wondering down on the page. He wondered about the color of raindrops, the color of the sky, the color of his heart, the color of his words when he sang aloud, and the color of his need for someone to hold.

One appeal failed in , another in About four years later he had enough to pay one of the best appellate lawyers in Michigan, so he sent in the money and waited for freedom. All the while he thought of his children, and remembered the taste of homemade ice cream, and wrote love poems to women, both real and imaginary, featuring beds made of violets and warm baths made of tears.

He waited, and waited. On January 1, , a date confirmed by his journal, Phillips was in his room when another inmate walked in with some news. It was a cold gray Monday at the Jackson prison, and Phillips had not seen his children in 2, days.

Poet, painter, engraver, and visionary William Blake worked to bring about a change both in the social order and in the minds of men. Though in his lifetime his work was largely neglected or dismissed, he is now considered one of the leading lights of English poetry, and his work has only grown in popularity. Far from being an isolated mystic, Blake lived and worked in the teeming metropolis of London at a time of great social and political change that profoundly influenced his writing.

In addition to being considered one of the most visionary of English poets and one of the great progenitors of English Romanticism, his visual artwork is highly regarded around the world.

The Older Woman and The Younger Man

For men everywhere who need to know that deep down what is more important than the search for wealth and status, is remembering that you have someone to love and who loves you back. Yeats’s poem “When You Are Old” is for men for whom growing old hold fears and worry. There will be those moments when you remember what you once had and it will give you pleasure.

When you are old and grey and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;. How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face;.

This article focuses on the way that his reading of contemporary Irish poetry, in particular, enabled him to re-furbish established poetic masks and to consolidate a new one in his final poetry collection of his lifetime. For while the editorship provided him with a magisterial view of contemporary poetry, this was accompanied by the attendant burden of office. This burden might best be seen as encumbering robes, which induced Yeats to puff himself up in order that he might fill them.

As I explore in the penultimate section of this article, such robes constitute an antithesis to the liberating energies of the mask. The mask has been re-furbished for New Poems, however, and now displays greater affinity with Irish-language poetry than ever before. He had gradually become familiar with this body of verse via his acquaintance with Douglas Hyde and Lady Gregory, and its effects on his own work can first be seen clearly in his revisions to the prose stories of The Secret Rose at the start of the twentieth century, and the revised edition of The Celtic Twilight It seems quite probable, however, that Yeats was prompted to return to his earlier presentation of old age by a poem he anthologized by the Welsh poet W.

Love, as many would agree, is beautiful and passionate. But, at times, it is unreasonable and defies logic. It makes you selfish and selfless — all at the same time.
